Rei

Rei is the bow — the gesture of respect that opens and closes almost everything in karate.

You bow when entering and leaving the dojo, before and after training with a partner, at the start and end of a kata, and to the sensei. The saying "karate begins and ends with rei" captures the idea that the art is as much about discipline and respect as it is about technique.
