Sensei

Sensei is the teacher — the person leading training in the dojo. Literally "one who came before".

In karate, a sensei is usually a dan-ranked black belt entrusted with a group. You address them as "sensei" during training, bow when greeting them, and respond to instructions with a clear "osu". The senior student assisting the sensei is the senpai.
